In HKJ7 the number of fry liberatedl in | the Kotorua district was 0n1y2.600,000, while the final liberations were not made until November 29, or nearly one month after the commencement ot the fishing season. Subject to there being no delays on account of unfavourable weather, it is expected that the final liberations this season will take place on October 17.Witli an increased output from the Xgongotaha hatchery of nearly two and a-lialf million fry during the past few weeks the departmental officers liavo been busily engaged in making liberations in all parts of the district. The liberation of 1300,000 fry in Lake Tarawera was completed last Wednesday. while SOO.OOO have been liberated in Lake Kotoiti and about <OO,OOO in Lake Kotorua. Consignments of 200,000 fry have also been liberated in the Okataina, Green, Okarcka, Hotoma and Rotochu lakes and 500,000 have been sent to the Bay of Plenty area. ' Including liberations carried out to- . day in the Waimana and Waioeka Hi vers, about 400.000 fry have been liberated in the Wairoa area from tho ! Waikaremoana hatchery and a further | batch of 100,000 will be ready for liberation within the next fortnight. Hatching operations havo also been proceeding steadily at Tokaanu and to date about 500,000 fry have been set free in the Taupo area, with further liberations' to be made before the season closes. OPENING OF SEASON THE AUCKLAXD DISTRICT Anglers in the Auckland acclimatisation district are looking forward to good sport when the trout-fishing season opens to-morrow. Large continued liberations of tront by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, an abundance of food in the streams during the winter and the fine weather experienced lately should result in anglers getting good catches.

The indications are that with the increasing popularity of 1 * trout fishing there will be an even larger number of sportsmen this season. Fishing gear has been in steady demand, and some sports dealers state that business shows an improvement upon that of last year. In the Rotorua and Taupo districts the season will not begin until November 1. i
