EMPIRE MAIL DELAYS

FURTHER INSTANCES SERVICE ACROSS TASMAN USE OF CARGO STEAMERS Filling one of frequent gaps between sailings of passenger liners in the Tasman service, the Sleigh Line cargo steamer James Cook is en route from Sydney to Auckland with two despatches of Empire air mail, those leaving London on September 10 and 11. The James Cook, -which left Sydney on Wednesday night, the day of the arrival of the two mails, should reach Auckland on Tuesday. This is the first occasion on which an intercolonial cargo ship apart from those of the Union Company has carried Empire air mail over the Tasman. "With the departure from Port Chalmers to-day for Sydney of the British freighter City of "Winchester with Empire air mail and Australian mail, an instance is given of inward and outward air despatches being at sea on cargo ships at the same time. The passenger steamer Maunganui, arriving at Auckland from Sydney tomorrow morning, has an Empire despatch dated September 8. She will take the next outward consignment on Monday.
