DOMINION CONFERENCE
WELCOME BY DEPUTY-MAYOR
GARAGE PROPRIETORS' AFFAIRS
Representing the various branches of the motor trade throughout New Zealand, about 50 delegates attended the opening session of the annual eonteronce of the New Zealand Motor Trades Federation in the Manchester Unity Hall yesterday. The delegates were welcomed by the deputy-mayor, Mr. .J. A. C. Alliim, who was accompanied by the town clerk, Mr. J. Moiling. '1 lie president of tho federation is Mr. V. J. McKibben, of Christchurch. Referring to tho phenomenal growth of tho motor trade in New Zealand, Mr. A Hum said that in tho Auckland metropolitan area tho number of vehicles had increased from 20,089 in 19,'!.'} to .12,190 in 19.57. Tho ratio of vehicles to tho population was one vohicle to 7.2. It was a compliment to the enterprise of the Dominion that it stood second to America in motor ownership, and it appeared as though tho peak had not yet been reached.
The Traffic Problem "We must not ho unmindful of the problems facing transport authorities in view of the large number of vehicles on the roads," said Mr. Allum. ''Traffic authorities have much in common with tho motor trado and many obstacles can be removed to tho full advantage of the travelling public if a spirit of co-operation between the two interests can be maintained." The annual meeting of tho New Zealand Garage Proprietors' Association was held yesterday afternoon and last night. Various matters affecting the trade were discussed.

Wholesale and retail representative teams will contest tho Seott Shield at golf this afternoon, and a social function will be hold in George Court's tearooms, to-night.
