AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGES

INDUSTRIALS FIRMER BRIGHTER TONE EVIDENT (Received September 16, 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 10 The Sydney Stock Exchange was in a brighter mood to-day as a result of Mr. Chamberlain's visit to Germany. Turnover was good, with a firmer undertone for industrials. Sales included: —

BARTHOLOMEW TIMBER SLIGHT FALL IN PROFIT DIVIDEND MAINTAINED The of the Bartholomew Land and Timber Company, Limited, Hamilton, show a net profit of £2607 for the year ended July 31, against £2709 in the previous year. The directors recommend a final dividend of per cent, making 5 per cent, unchanged, for the year. The report states that the reduced demand for timber experienced last year continued for the first half of this year, but during the latter half there was an increased and steadier inquiry. Particulars of the Government rural building scheme are now awaited, and when this is in operation a more balanced demand should result. Plant, machinery and tramways are in good order and accommodation has been improved. The death of Mr. A. H. Tompkins, chairman and managing director since the company's inception 33 years ago, is referred to with regret. Mr. C. Sutcliffo was appointed general manager and Mr. E. C. Day filled the vacancy on the diuctorate. Milligan, local director and attorney for the Martha Gold Mining Company (Waihi), Limited, that the directors have declared an interim dividend of 9d a share, free of income tax. It is payable on November 1. The distribution compares with interim and final payments of Is a share last year, making 2s a 5s share, or 40 per cent. The present dividend is at the rate of 30 per cent per annum. Payment is made in sterling. The view that with the virtual ox-, haustion of the Junction mine and the limits of development beginning to appear elsewhere, it was unlikely that dividends could be maintained at previous rates, was expressed by the chairman of the company, Mr. G. R. Mitchison, at the annual meeting in London in May.
