CRUSHING DEFEAT
AUSTRALIAN SIDE BATSMEN COLLAPSE LOWEST SCORE OF TOTJR BOWES TAKES 5 WICKETS By Tolograph—Press As36clation —Copyright LONDON, Sopt, 18 The Australian cricketers in their last match in England were overwhelmed by Mr. H. D. G. LevesonGower's English eleven at Scarborough. Tho English side won by 10 wickets.
The tour ends with a three-day game at Dublin, starting on Thursday, against the Gentlemen of Ireland.
At the end of tho second day's play at tho festival tho position was that England, after declaring with eight wickets down, had a lead of 57 runs. Two Australian bowlers batted for a quarter of an hour before stumps without scoring a run, and refused to go for obvious singles.
Good Bowling When tho match was resumed this morning W. E. Bowes (Yorkshire), one of tho test fast bowlers, plowed down to medium paco and had all the batsmen in trouble. On tho dismissal of McCabe, tho Australian captain, ho had taken three wickets for eight runs, and six men wore out for 55 in less than an hour and a-lialf's play to-day. O'Reilly went in the first over of the day. Ward and Brown played dofensively, and the former made a valuable stay of 55 minutes before he was bowled by Nichols. Brown was an hour in getting nine runs, playing maiden after maiden. Fingleton was out to a splendid legside catch at the wickets. Badcock was clean bowled next over. Barnes soon followed and still the deficit had not been overtaken. Brown continued to defend with sureness and determination; and Bowes was again hostile after lunch.
Worst Failure The tall Yorkshireman was largely responsible for Australia's worst collapse and the lowest innings of the tour. It ended after 175 minutes. Sutcliffe and Hutton sot about tho comfortable task of getting 46 runs to win. Half an hour's batting was sufficient to complete a crushing defeat.
