PHILOSOPHER'S DEATH
DR. SAMUEL ALEXANDER HOLDER OF ORDER OF MERIT (Received September 14, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 13 The death has occurred of Dr. Samuel Alexandor, the first Australian to receive the Order of Merit. He was formerly, professor of philosophy at the Victoria University of Manchester. Dr. Alexander, who was 79 years of age, -was born in Sydney. Ho was educated at Wesley College, Melbourne, and the University of Melbourne, and later at Balliol College, Oxford. He was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Manchester in 1893 and occupied the post until 1924.
Dr. Alexander received the Order of Merit in 1930. His philosophical reputation extended throughout tho ■wTorld and many students of tho subject considered that he ranked as a modern Spinoza.
