BRITISH ANXIETY
LEADERS' CONFERENCE STAFF CHIEFS CONSULTED DESIRE FOR SETTLEMENT LONDON, Sept. 13 British Ministers and staff chiefs today discussed emergency measures, with the object of putting them into operation if the European crisis develops. The Dominions aro being kept informed of developments hour by hour.
The conference with the Prime Minister, Mr. Chnmberlain, and other Ministers was attended by Viscount Gort, Chief of tho General Staff; Sir Roger Backhouse, Chief of the Naval Staff; Air Marshal Sir Cyril Newell, Chief of the Air Staff. The members of the Cabinet present were: —Sir Thomas Inskip, Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence; Mr. Hore-Belisha, Secretary of State for War; Mr. DuffCooper, First Lord of the Admiralty; and Sir Kingsley Wood, Secretary of State for Air.
It is stated in authoritative quarters, says the Australian Associated Press, that nobody can tell how or when vital decisions may be forced on various Governments. It is worth making quite clear, however, how anxious Britain is to see a settlement of the crisis. It is impossible to suppose that she will bo able to stand aside from a general conflict involving the integrity of France.
