AUSTRALIAN COAL STRIKE The failure. of conferences between mine owners and men led to a coal strike in several Newcastle mines m Australia 50-; years ago. The following is an extract; from the New Zealand Herald of .September 15, 1888: "Little surprise is felt here at tn* failure of conferences yesterday Between coalmasters and the men. large number of miners have ie England for Newcastle under tnr years' engagement.
