MAORI HOSTEL PLAN
FINANCE RESPONSIBILITY LOCAL BODIES' POSITION [FROM OUR OWN COKRKSroVDKNT] HAMILTON, "Wednesday "Why cannot the Native Department go to the State Advances Corporation for the money?-" asked Mr. R. G. Young at a meeting of the Waikato County Council to-day when -a request was received from Dr. H. B. Turbott, medical officer of health at Hamilton, to appoint a representative to attend a conference of local body members to discuss the question of erecting n hostel for the accommodation of Maoris visiting Hamilton. "ft is not a matter for the local bodies, and I think it is absolutely ridiculous to go round with a hat for finance," Mr. Young continued. "Wo have no money to give to the project. ]t is clearly a,, matter for the Native Department to attend to, and I second the appointment of the chairman as delegate only on the condition that wo are not committed in regard to finance."
The chairman, Mr. J. A. Sampson, was deputed to represent the council at the conference. •
