£6O IN FINES IMPOSED
PROSECUTION AT TE KUITI EXTENSIVE TRADING ALLEGED [BV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE KUITI, "Wednesday Fines totalling £6O were imposed upon Douglas Kenneth Watson, a lorrydriver, of To Kuiti, in the Magistrate's Court on charges connected with the sale of liquor in a proclaimed area. For selling liquor in n proclaimed area ho was fined £'so, with costs 10s, on a charge of keeping liquor lor sale he was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10s, while on each of two charges of failing to notify liquor which was to be brought into the King Country ho was fined £o and costs 10s.
Sergeant Campagnolo described a raid on Watson's house on August I J. He found a quantity of beer and spirits. Of 60 dozen quart bottles of beer purchased on August 2 only 33 bottles were found, 57 dozen bottles having been disposed of during ono week. This liquor and also a quantity of spirits had not been declared.
At a later stage Watson said lie purchased this beer at lis a dozen and retailed the bottles at 2s each. Sergeant Campagnolo said that, although Watsou was carrying on in a large way, lie was a better type than the average "sly grog" seller.
