STREET DANGERS
I'EDESTEIAN CROSSINGS LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM REQUEST TO THE CITY COUNCIL A request for the erection of green lights to control pedestrian crossings in the Auckland city area will be made to the City Council by the Automobile Association (Auckland),_ as the result of a decision reached at a meeting of the association last night. The council will also be asked to erect curb signs to mark lesser-used pedestrian crossings in the suburbs. Members referred to the haphazard use of crossings by pedestrians under the present system, which permitted straggling and free passage for persons who walked 011 to crossings after motorists hud been waiting .some moments for others to pass. The urgent need for some moro definite control was urged, and it was agreed that the most satisfactory system for all concerned would be the erection of lights to indicate proper right of way to pedestrian and motorist.
The extension of such a scheme to the suburbs was not recommended, members saying that strict control was not there necessary. However, it was pointed out that crossings were not always visible, even from short distances. and it was felt that signs would eliminate the danger of accidents. The association recommended that the requests should be considered in conjunction with the council's plan to review the positions of crossings. More frequent painting of the city crossings was also requested.
