SUCCESSOR AGED 85 SON OF THE FIRST HOLDER ENGINEER AND RUNHOLDER ■ » [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] CHEISTCHURCH, "Wednesday The successor to the Clifford baronetcv, Sir Walter Lovelace Clifford, who becomes the fourth baronet- as a result of the -death yesterday of Sir Charles Clifford, is a son of the first baronet, -and an engineer by-pro-fession. He TS 85 years of age and has lived quietly at Fendalton for a number of ,years. His heir is his brother, Sir.-Charles William Clifford, who resides at Market Drayton, England. , The new baronet -was born in Wellington in I§S3 and was educated at Beaumont, England. He was trained as a civil engineer and for some time he was engaged on surveying underground railways in London. Later he was an engineer on tho Swansea Coming to New Zealand, he was appointed engineer a difficult section of the Midland railwav line beyond Springfield. On the death of his father he' became part-owner station, which ho managed-with great success until the larger part of Hit was acquired by the Government for closer settlement. The area sold included the present site of the township of Ward. He was in England during the"'war, after which he returned to _ the Dominion and took up residence in Christchurch. . _ He married at Swansea Miss Cath- , erine Bath, who died some years ago. There were ijhree daughters of the marriage, the late Mrs. A. Brustad, Mrs. W. Wallis (Wellyn, a garden citv near London), and Mrs. Shirreff-Hilton, who lives with her father at Fendalton.
