UNCLE ASSAULTED

YOUNG MAN CONVICTED EXPENSES TO BE PAID Arising out of a disturbance in a house in Newton on July 8, a charge of assaulting his uncle, a middle-aged man, was preferred against Haywood Lorraine Hand, aged 21 (Mr. C. Clarke), when lie appeared on summons before Mr. C. I\. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused denied the charge.

Sub-Inspector Fox said both of the men had been drinking, and accused addressed insulting remarks to his uncle. A fight ensued, during which complainant's jaw was broken in two places, necessitating hospital treatment. After hearing evidence, the magistrate said accused appeared to have been responsible for the assault, and he was admitted to probation for u year, and ordered to abstain from taking liquor. Accused was also ordered to pay 17s 6d toward his uncle's hospital and dental expenses and £1 17s witnesses' expenses.
