SPEEDBOAT SUNK

MISHAP AT DETROIT EVE OF GOLD CUP RACE PILOT SERIOUSLY INJURED | (Received September 5, 8;io p.m.) DETROIT, Sept. 4 The new £IB,OOO speedboat Notra Dame, built for Mr. Herbert Mendelson to defend the American PowerBoat Association Challenge Gold Cup, struck a submerged log on the eve of the race and plunged to the bottom. Glell Perry, the designer and pilot, wa® lifted unconscious into a rescue boat and taken to hospital suffering from concussion and three fractures of the left arm. His condition is 6erious. The other occupant of the boat, a mechanic, was not injured. Attempts are being made to raise the Notre Dame, but she is certain not to race, leaving the Italian Count Monterera favoured above the other six entrants.

Mr. Mendelson's boat won the Gold Cup in last year's race, her speed in her fastest heat being 68.45 miles an hour.
