Tho week-end's fighting resulted in the first direct threat to the Chinese headquarters at Hankow, says the Shanghai correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The Chinese are throwing reinforcements into bitter conflicts on all fronts as the Japanese, in fan formation, are attacking at three points on the north and south banks of the Yangtse, namely Kwangtsi, which is being stoutly held, and also Mahweiling and Wusieh. The Chinese casualties at Mahweiling, where, a day's conflict, the Japanese cut the Kiukiang-Nanchang railway, are estimated at 10,000, says a message from Tokio. Japanese airmen machine-gunned 20,000 fugitives without retaliation. The Japanese have captured Wukiashen, in central Hupeh, killing 700 Chinese.

The Japanese claim that the Chinese are retreating on the two fronts defending Hankow. The Japanese are now advancing toward Kwangshi, Matouchen and Teian.
