RELIEF MEASURES PLANNED STATEMENT BY MINISTER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] THAMES. Monday 1 The repeated flooding of farms in the Hauraki and Matatoki districts, which has caused concern to farmers, is the subject of a letter from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. It. Scrapie, to Mr. J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames. "I have to advise that my department is arranging to put in hand immediately work for which 1 advised you £615 had been authorised," states Mr. Semple." Concerning the major repairs covering the whole of the district subject to flooding partly in your electorate and partly in the Hauraki electorate, I have to advise that a comprehensive scheme is necessary, estimated to cost, I think, something in the vicinity of £50,000. "Tlio greater portion of this work comes within the control of the LaiMs Department and I am at present awaiting a report from that department. The matter is also under reference to the Minister of Finance and I will try and expedite a decision as to what can be dono to provido the much-needed relief in this area.
