The weather was fine, but the wicket was moist for a start owing to a heavy fall of dew. Bradman, Chipperfield, Fleet-wood-Smith, Walker and McCormick were omitted from the Australian team. The visitors again had no twelfth man. McCorniick, who is suffering from a strained log muscle, appears to bo bordering on a break-down. Desperate Fight for Runs
While the effect of the dew lasted, the festival match threatened to become; anything but festive for tiie Australians, who had to fight desperately for runs against accurate bowling on the type of pitch on which Maurice Tate would have been deadly. However, thanks to the solidity of Barnes and the superb confidence and freedom of Barnett's hitting, Australia extricated itself from a difficult position and again the tail-endcrs drove home the advantage. Fingleton failed to settle down and repeatedly mistimed his shots. The partnership between Barnes and Bar* nett added 115 runs in 70 minutes. Chanceless Display Barnett hit nine fours'Sn a chanceless innings, while Barnes drove with tremendous power after passing his 50 and hit 10 fours. McCabe, "when still requiring 2G for his 1000 runs iu first-class matches on the tour, was stumped off Wilkinson. The attendance was only 4000. Details of the scores are as follows:—!
