EPSOM TRAINING

NOVICES IN ACTION PROMISING YOUNG PACERS MARAMA ROSE FILLY PLEASES BY ABAYDOS With the majority of horses resting after the Auckland Trotting Club's August meeting, the tracks at Epsom have been fairly quiet. Most work on Saturday was done by young and novice horses who are in the early stages of their education. An unnamed filly by Jack Potts (K. Hell), Madarla, by Jack Potts (J. Gee) and Golden Bangle (L. J. Mahonev) were given useful work over thrco circuits. The Jack Potts filly, who is from Maratna Pose, by Matchlight—Dandy Bose, is making good progress and should come to hand more quickly than her stablemate. She is a well-mannered filly with good style and action.

Madarla, is a powerful type and leaves the impression that ho will require timo to develop. His dam, Locality, is by Logan Pointer from Fatality, a maro by Electioneer from Accident, by Monte Cliristo, Golden Bangle is shaping up nicely and making some improvement. She is by Jewel Pointer from Princess Audubon, whoso dam, Sylvie, was a successful producer. Don Walla (N.L. Craig) worked a steady rnilo and a-quarter. He is doing most of his work free-legged and, like his sire, Walla Walla, ho paces well without the straps. Nella Dillon Colt

The Auto Machine —Nella Dillon colt (L. Laver) paced a couple of laps impressively, showing speed in a short sprint. He is furnishing into a solid customer and much resembles his sire. His dam, Nella Dillon, was a speedy mare by Author Dillon from Nell Pointer, by Logan Pointer —Gianella, who produced the good performers Tempest and Grand Canyon. An unnamed mare by Surprise Journey (W. Fleming) gave a sound display of trotting over a mile and a-half. Although she is not very big she has a nice style and is gaining speed. Her sire was one of the best of a number of Australian-bred trotters by First Voyage to race successfully in New Zealand and he has a mile and a-quar-ter winning record of 2.49 1-5, registered when he won among the pacers. S. M. August is working the trotter Golden Surprise, by Surprise Journey from Eyre Heiress. He is not being hurried and appears to bo becoming more solid with age. Eyre Heiress was bv Harold Dillon from Eyrechild, who produced Solo, 2.10 4-5, Peter Eyre and Great Eyre> dam of Great Admiral and Golden Eagle. Frank Pedmond (A. Paton) made no mistakes while working a steady two miles and he is making satisfactory progress. He appears to have benefited by the long spell he had. Great Surprise, who is making a recovery from the injury to his leg contracted when racing at the August meeting, was given easy exercise. L. Laver has him in splendid condition. Autumn Lu Goes Steadily

Autumn Lu (G. H. Stubbs) trotted two miles at a useful speed and is assuming racing shape. She will not be ready for the Wellington meeting, but with the prospects of suitable classes at the Auckland spring meeting, is being kept going. Petite Jewel (J. Furnell) accomplished useful work over a mile and a-half. The Jewel Pointer gelding, who won twice last season, is coming to hand nicely and promises to show further improvement this term. Bismuth (J. Taylor) worked two miles unhoppled, moving smartly in a couple of short sprints. He is in great heart, but was not seen to advantage last month in the heavy ground. Lucky Love (W. Willetts) was keen to go faster while working threo laps unhoppled at a useful speed. He took no harm from his race at the August meeting, when he did well to finish fourth from the back mark in the Orakei Handicap. The full-sister to Lucky Lovo trotted a mile and a-half with freedom and is making steady development. Native Princess, a recent addition to W. Head's team, was worked steadily on the sand. She is building up in condition and later may show a return to form. The sister to Native Prince has failed when raced at two miles, but is bred to stay. Our Princess (W. Willetts), unhoppled, paced threo laps very freely. Fisher (A. Paton) executed similar work. Our Princess is carrying plenty of condition and should benefit from racing. Fisher, a fine free-legged worker, did not reproduce his form when hoppled, but the heavy track was not to his liking.

SOUTHLAND HORSES MILFORD ON THE IMPROVE [by TKLEGHAI'H —OWN correspondent] INVERCAIJGILL, Saturday Milford was responsible for an encouraging effort when he finished close up fourth in the Tally-Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt Meeting. Ho was improved by the outing and should be worth following in his future engagements. 110 will make his next appearance at the Oraklino meeting and has also been nominated for the New Zealand Cup. Other local horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup are Paladino and Ardehoille. One of the most attractive looking novices at lnvercargill is the three-year-old chestnut gelding by Bosenor from the Paladin —Silver Peak mare Wanaka. He has been in ligh exerciso all the winter and is looking bright and healthy. Boswell has furnished into a solidlooking four-year-ohl and should be capable of showing his best form early in the spring. He may make his first appearance this season at the Geraldine meeting.

Merry Simon, who is now owned by the Winton trainer P. J. Boyle, is making good progress in his preparation. Boyle also has the jumper Faculties in solid work. Foxlove lias been recommissioned by V. W. Ellis, who is also working a gelding by Balboa from Bow Street. Galleon is undergoing road work preparatory to being put into active training in October. J. A. Rowland is not hurrying Aspire, who is going along nicely iti her work. She showed promising form last season and should be a good proposition this term.

The first foal sired in New Zealand by Salmagundi made its appearance last week at W. T. Hazlett's stud. It is a colt from the Paper Money—lllume marc Flicker.
