BRIGHT CRICKET

SUSSEX BATSMEN FIRST-INNINGS LEAD CENTURY TO BARTLETT FAST RATE OP SCORING By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August 31, 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, August 30 "Bright cricket for Brighton" was the Sussex slogan against the Australians yesterday, for the county secured a first innings lead of 117 runs.

However, the Australians made up the deficiency in their second innings to-day, their score at tho *

luncheon adjournment being 163 for the loss of three wickets.

The hero of the Sussex innings of 4-53 was H. T. Bartlett, whose remarkable innings of 176, not out, at Lord's jn July, paved the way for tho amateurs' victory, over the professionals by 133 runs.

Bartlett yesterday scored the fastest century of the year, and with James Langridge, who played in Auckland during the 1927-28 season, Bartlett was associated in a partnership of nearly 200 runs for the fourth wicket. When stumps were drawn on Saturday, Sussex, in reply to Australia's 336, had 43 rune on the board without loss (John Langridge 20. Stain ton 22).

Another 410 runs were compiled by the county to-day, and Australia lost one wicket for 47 in the second innings, Bartlett's Pine Display

The weather was bleak and windy, and there was only a small attendance. Jho wicket had been covered from rain in the night, but was hard apd true

Langridge was well stumped on jumping out to hit one from Ward.

Stainton and Harry Parks continued with some of the most enterprising county batting yet seen against Australia. Both were victims to leg-before decisions. Stainton hit eight fours in a cheerful, stylish innings. Then the left-handers, Bartlett and James Langridge, were partnered. Bartlett lived up to his reputation as a big hitter. He scored sixes off White and Ward, and had 50 on the board in 33 minutes, and 100 in 57 minutes. He scored 22 off one of Ward's overs, including two fours and two sixes off consecutive balls. Bartlett gave a beautiful display, batting with amazing power and a minimum of effort. Australia's Total Eclipsed .

Walker again injured the index finger of his left hand, and it is feared that it is fractured. Barnett thereupon kept wickets after lunch, when Bartlett went cn driving magnificently. He reached 150 in 110 minutes. Soon afterward he was splendidly caught on the boundary. He had hit six sixes and 18 fours.

Bartlett's partnership with James Langridge was worth 195 in 120 minutes for the fourth wicket.

Australia's score was passed with six wickets standing. Langridge batted in restrained fashion for 170 minutes. G. Cox was only 100 minutes at the crease for his 76, which included two sixes and 10 fours. He dealt out terrific punishment to Ward. Highest County Score of Tour Sussex's innings was easily the season' 6 highest against Australia, except in the test matches. It lasted for 330 minutes. Australia batted for 45 minutes before stumps, Brown and Barnes giving stylish displays.

The weather was fine and the wicket good when play was resumed to-day. There was a small attendance. Brown was caught at the wicket off a ball coming through fast, to which, he played defensively. Barnes, after a stay of 100 minutes, played a ball on.

With Australia still 26 behind, Barnett, promoted nearer the top, hooked and drove gloriously and soon wiped off the deficiency, while except for a couple of flashing fours, played cautiously.
