EPSOM WINNERS

SOUND BREEDING LINES KENWORTHY'S FINE FORM COMPASS RELISHES GOING BY ABAYDOS Xo sire was represented by more than one winner at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, those to gain honours being Wattle Derby, Guy MeElwyn, Frank Worthy, Key do Oro, Peter Moko, Gunuligger, Truman Direct and Man o' War. Frank Worthy had the distinction of siring Kemvortliy and Proletarian, wlw finished first and second respectively in the August Handicap. Guy MeElwyn and Gunidiymer were successfully represented for the first time.

Kemvortliy, now a six-year-old, has won each season ho has been racing, his first success being as a two-year-old, when ho won the improvers' Handicap at Claudelands, beating a large field of older horses in 2.53 1-5. The following year Ken worthy was second to Valdor in tho Great Northern Trotting Derby, repeating tho performance of Proletarian the previous season, when Subsidy won by ji small margin. Both sons of Frank Worthy liavo since made good progress.

Kemvortliy represents the AxworthyPeter the Great cross, his sire being a son of tho famous Guy Axworthy, who left Lee Axworthy, 1.58J, Guy McKiuney, l.uSil, Mr. MeElwyn, 1.59J, and Arion Guy, 1.59 J. Frank Worthy had a record of and his dam, Hollyrood May, produced many below the 2.10 standard. Kenworthy's dam is by Peter Moko, 2.5, whose grand-dam, Mrs. Nash, left Peter Nash, 2.1. Proletarian's dam, Waterfall, was by tho dual New Zealand Cup winner Wildwood Junior from the Australianbred Myrtle Girl, by Torrent, son of Vancleve. Equipoise Very Speedy

Equipoise, who represented Hey do Oro, possesses briliaut speed and with a little more age should develop into a fine stayer. Ho is barrier-shy, but may overcome this trouble with further racing, liey de Oro sired many with fine records, including Hoi L'Or, holder of world's grass records, 2.36 2-5 and 4.14 1-5, Parisienne, four-year-old record, 4.20, and De Soto, Key Spec, Blair Athol, Silver de Oro, Daphne de Oro, Recess and Gaillard. The dam of Equipoise is by Our Thorpe from a Victor Royal mare, who produced Stanmoor, a good winner for S. M. August, ownertrainer of Equipoise. Compass, by Man o' War from a Harold Dillon mare, has been a useful performer in the last two seasons, but his win was his first for F. V. Cutts, who had him in splendid condition. Like his sire, Man o' War, Compass is very partial to heavy going and has registered his best performances when the ground has been that way. Compass was second in his last start of the past season and did not take long to <jo one better this term.

Very few of Truman Direct's progeny have raced in Auckland, but True Trust and Ketc Kura have both won. In holding off Forest Jewel and Parauri in a hard finish True Trust showed improved staying power and he received valuable assistance from A. W. Broughton,.who drove a well-judged race. True Trust's dam, Trustworthy, by Worthy -Bond from Connie, was a good free-legged pacer, who gained her first success its a two-year-old in hopples. Connie was by Golconda, a son of Galindo and Monica, from Agnes B. Best American Strains Swordsman, who made a successful reappearance, is another with the Peter ,tho Great-Axworthy cross. His sire, Peter Volo, and Lee Axworthy, sire of his dam, Lydia Lee, are famous in America, and their progeny in the 2.0 class justifies their high place. Nell Volo, one of tho finest trotters to race in New Zealand, is by Peter Volo. Swordsman did stud duty last season and on breeding should be a good sire, lie lias improved in solidness and should reach a high standard. Stargum, who has performed fairly consistently, scored his first success, but he is likely to go on to greater things. He is a product of Gunuligger and Nellie Bramley, the latter a very speedy but erratic mare by Great Audubon from a Harold Dillon mare. Gumdigger, a good winner, comes from a good family, being by Gold Bell from Sundial, a union that also produced Gold Dredge and Bell Dial, Sundial was by Star Child, son of Rothschild, and her dam was by Irvington, by Hambletonian 10. Success Deserved Tommy MeElwyn deserved his success after his sound placed efforts last season, and at his first start ho won very easily in the hands of L. J. Mn honey. In a tighter class, driven by M. Stewart, he beat everything except Equipoise. His Si re, Guy MeElwyn, was a very fine trotter by Guy Axworthy from Margaret Parrish, from Miss Spiers, an imported mare by Peter the Great, 2.7 i, from Widow Lola, 2.10. To Nelson Bingen Miss Spiers produced Herbilwyn, Nelson MeElwyn and the diminutive Jean MeElwyn, ono of the finest pacers foaled in New Zealand. Christeonia, dam of Tommy .MeElwyn, is by Waverley, one of Thelma's long list of winners from Jay Bells, by Abbey Bells from Jenny Bird, both American importations. Aurumar, another to lose her novice status, showed marked improvement on her winter form and trotted soundly. She is by Wattlo Derby, son of Nelson Derby and a mare of the Wattle line. Wattlo was by Rothschild from Watlass, by Berlin from Messenger Maid, who goes back to the thoroughbred Napoleon. Charley's Aunt, dam of Aurumar, produced to Antonio tho useful pacer Scandal, who was a successful saddle performer for A. McMillan, trainer of Aurumar. AN IMPROVING PACER KEWPIE'S BINGEN SECOND The forward running of Kewpie's Bingen in the second division of the Mount Eden Handicap at Epsom on Saturday suggests that the Peter Bingen gelding will soon supply the missing link in the record of Kewpie as a winner-producing matron. Kcwpie's Bingen is tho only one of the seven offspring of Kewpie to race without a win. Kcwpie's successful progeny are Kcwpie's Guy, Kewpie's King, Kewpie's Crest, all by Blue Mountain King, Kcwpie's Triumph, by The Triumph, Kewpie's Bond, by Worthy Bond, and Kewpie's Queen, by Peter Bingen. Kewpie's Bond mated with Great Parrish, produced tho useful winner Bold Venture. Another of the Kewpie family who will compete later this season is Kewpie's Jewel, b.v Jewel Pointer, who was purchased by Mr. E. G. Bridgens and in engaged' in the Great Northern Trotting Derby.
