TAKANINI TEAMS

FIFTY HORSES IN WORK ATTRACTIVE TWO-YEAR-OLDS ENGAGED FOR EARLY RACING ORELIO HAS MANY ADMIRERS There are upward of 50 horses undergoing preparation for racing at Takanini. F. Smith has charge of 14, E. Pope has 12, W. Townsend and C. Morse eight each. AH these trainers are feeling the shortage of stable hands. Although not -working against time as yet, Hot Box is looking fit after wintering well to complete his preparation for the Avondale Guineas. Arvakur, who displayed speed as a two-year-old, and who claims engagements in the classics, is pleasing in appearance. Last season's efforts suggest lie will prove useful as a sprinter. The Limond —Watcrwings two-year-old, Orelio, will disappoint Takanini enthusiasts if he does not pay his way. He is a compact individual of attractive bearing, who has been shaping the right way for early racing. Although she is on the small, side, the fact that Princess Val is a half-sister to Hot Box must attract attention to her. She is by Vaals —Iceball and is one of Smith's team.

A Late Foal Some interest will be taken in the black two-year-old colt, by Foxbridge— Ga;:a!ie, in work here, because of relationship to Gazique. a Winter Cup winner. He was a late foal and so will take time, but promises to develop on good linos. Valamito bears the stamp of one able to figure again as a winner, although he has only recently returned to work after a two months' spell. Round Up and Anion are working sufficiently well to please their trainer. Although the latter lias. disappointed on occasions, his party is still optimistic regarding his prospects. The fact that the aged maiden performer, Paddy the Pip, was runnerup to Olympus at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting is some encouragement to carry on, for as yet he has done little racing, and has been twice in the money. B. Myers' gelding has done well since his last outing. Grateful has recently resumed work. He looks as i£. it would not take long to get him into racing shape again. Gay Movie made good time in a short sprint during the week, and this youngster looks as if the Pakuranga parade, •when she finished fourth, has sharpened her up. When Royevrus steps out as a three-year-old, his development since last racing will be noted. In a seven-furlong task on Thursday morning, in company with his stable-mate Pocket Venus, W. Townsend's charge acquitted himself well. Sisters in Training Since Bon Star was fired and returned to active work, ho is going along safely, but if there is a recurrence of his former trouble ho will not be trained again. Mr. R. H. Townsend, part-owner of Windsor Lad, bred two young horses, who are in his brother's, W. Townsend, stable. They are full-sisters, by Surveyor —Betty Comet, one a two-year-old named Little Star, the other a three-year-old, Gay Opal. Also in the stable is a two-year-old sister to Royevrus. Poker Dice, who was a disappointment last season, has developed since last raced and has prospects. Milanion and High Sea were tried over five furlongs on Thursday morning, and the race he had at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting to have improved Milanion. Bachelor King, in the charge of A. Tinker, has been getting through useful work on the plough, but in its present condition there is nothing against a horse being got ready for racing on that track. Plans for Flood Tide The impression at Takanini is that Flood Tido may not go to Melbourne for the Cup. When questioned about the matter on Thursday, R. Miller stated that he did not know. The Jellicoo Handicap winner is thriving. Dauber suffered injury when racing in the Bracelet at Pakuranga, and is now on the easy list, it is believed that the soil of Romeo will pay his way in the hunters' class. R. Miller has hopes of Miss Lovelock. sister to Flood Tide, developing into a stayer. Miss Lovelock was raced in Victoria last year. Siega may be tried as a hurdler, as with C. Walters in the saddle she was schooled over an obstacle. G. Courtney's filly by Foxbridge— Lady Marie has given further encouragement since her parade gallop at the hunt meeting on Saturday last. L G. Abel, who sold Gay Talkie to an Indian buyer, is of the opinion that Flash By will turn out a good hurdler, since the four-year-old finished second at the hunt fixture. Abel has others for racing later, including a hay colt by Oration —Grand Spirit, and a black filly by Maori Boy—Greta Rose. It may be worthy of mention that Flash By was a late foal and will not be four years old until November. Eight for Avondale Of 10. Pope's team' of ten, eight are being got ready with a view to racing at Avondale, and four of those were given barrier exercise on Thursday, namely, Bronwen, Anopheles, Maxam and a lillv by Lvsander. Included in the team is Esi.ro, a likely-looking sort by Tea Tray —Tambourine, who was recently broken-in and is now in work. Palustre looks as if she could bo got ready at short notice. High Quality. who was fired some time back, is being given trotting exercise and soon again may be seen out as a hurdler. It is the intention later on to put Inquisitor to jumping, and ho seems the right stamp. As the tracks are drying he is heing sent along fast. Never a good mover in heavy ground, Parquet, who was allotted hill and road work for some time, is to be returned to the track. She may win a •fair handicap .when at her best. Gold Petal's connections have been optimistic since the Oration gelding displayed pace during his Sylvia Park Handicap engagement last week. The speedy Valimecn is not. to bo hurried, but has wintered well. C. Morse's team includes Hunter's Rose, Ivy Willonvx and a six-year-old. Loch Mara, by Te Monanui—Connetnara. The lastnamed never raced, but was purchased for a jumper. Hunter's Rose conies from the Gisborne district and claims relationship to Tannliauser and Cherubini, successful South island performers.
