NEW STREET NAMES

MOUNT EDEN OBJECTIONS PETITIONS TO COUNCIL Protesting against the renaming of several streets and roads in the borough, petitions and individual letters were received at last night's meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council. The matter was referred to a subcommittee for its consideration. A petition from 45 residents of Ngauruhoo Boad, formerly Gordon Poad, asked that the name be changed to A resident forwarded a list of short, suitable Maori names for the council's consideration. Batepa.vers of Akepiro Street, formerly Arnold Street, objected to the new name,- contending that it would cause general inconvenience to all concerned. "We have not unreasonably objected to any change, if required for postal convenience, but do object to the ugly-looking, ugly-sounding and tricky spelling name of 'Akepiro,' " stated the letter of a resident. "Why is our wish for 'Arnott' Street, or 'Toro' Street, if Maori is wanted by the council, ignored by a pouncil elected to represent the ratepayers' interests? I ask that the question bo considered with a view to meeting our wishes. Tho name of a street should 'bo chosen to suit the residents and not the whim of some outsider."
