FORM REVIEWED

RUNNERS AT ELLERSLIE FINE EFFORT BY FLOOD TIDE KILONSA NARROWLY DEFEATED BY ARCHER Easily the best performance at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Kllerslio on Saturday was that of Flood Tido in winning the Jellicoo Handicap with 9.2. The outstanding feature of the victory was the brilliant finishing run he made and lie demonstrated that ho is right back to form. No definite announcement lias been made, but there - is a probability that ho may make another trip to Melbourne, where he went amiss when in fine form last year. Flood Tide is engaged in tlio Melbourne Cup with 8.8.

There nro few more consistent performers in Auckland than Kilonsa and she was responsible for another fine effort when she went under by half a head in the Jellicoo Handicap to Flood Tido, from whom she was receiving only 51b. It was lior seventh minor placing in 10 starts since she won the Ralph Handicap at Ellerslie last January and a win for her would bo well deserved. Kilonsa was turned out in tlio pink of condition by her painstaking trainer H. Jury.

As a tliree-vear-old last season, Royal Bachelor proved his worth as a sprinter and his third in the Jellicoo Handicap indicated that he may make an early return to tlio winning list. There is no doubt about his brilliance and when he is a little more seasoned lie is likely to run on better than formerly. In spite of the fact that he made the pace ami was headed by Kilonsa some distance from the post, Royal Bachelor fought on gamely and was less than a length from the winner. The race should improve him and he should be worth watching in his next few starts. Horovvhenua Shapes Well

Although lie was the outsider but one of the field of 15, Horowhenua made a creditable showing in the Jellicoe Handicap and waS a close lifth at the finish. it is a long time since Horowhenua was on the winning list, hut he should be a possibility for a race at the spring meetings if he maintains his present progress. He was ridden on Saturday by the young apprentice JL Markwick, who shaped well in his first ride in a race. No excuses can be oli'ered for the defeat of Vahnint in the Jellicoe Handicap, as he had a splendid run and was beaten by threo good horses, who were too good for hint on the day. However, ho ran a sound race and there will be opportunities for him at the approaching spring meetings. Armacourt was another well supported runner who failed in the Jellicoe Handicap and she never flattered the hopes of her admirers at any stage. After wins in his two previous starts and a good schooling display, Hanover was sent out favourite for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup and he disappointed badiy. He was very tired when ho fell at the fourth to last fence and was evidently beaten by the hill and the heavy going. Hanover is a fine jumper and he may be seen to more advantage over flat country. Kinkle was another who ran much below expectations in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup apd possibly lie was feeling tho eflects of his exertions earlier in the winter. A Sound Performance V " Although defeated by Long Span in tho Auckland Handicap, the four-year-old El Meynell registered a sound performance, failing only near the end after attempting to lead throughout. As he was burdened with 9.9 and was conceding the winner 231b, the honours of the race were clearly with El Meynell, who has made steady improvement since coming from Sydney to join K. S. Bagby's team several months ago. As he is at tho top of the weights among the hacks, it is probable that he may be given an opportunity in open company at tho spring meetings. Steady improvement is being maintained by Long Span and, after racing unluckily on a couple of occasions, he registered his best performance to date when lie ran on solidly to win the Auckland Handicap. Long Span is very fit and does not appear to be anything out of the ordinary, but in his present form 11. J. Mateer may be able to place him to further advantage during the spring campaign. It is evident from the dash he displayed whil£ his condition lasted that Philcourt has lost none of his speed and when he is more forward he should be worth watching. Tho half-brother to Gay Blonde and Gay Sheik has furnished into a very solid three-year-old and ho should do good service for W. J. McLean if all goes well with him. Tho race he had on Saturday should bo very beneficial to Philcourt, who appears to bo a gross customer.

NOVICE JUMPERS SCHOOLING AT ELLERSLIE , Several novices were given schooling tasks over tho hurdles in the middle at Ellerslie yesterday morning. British Banner (Fergus) cleared four fences, but he was inclined to get in too close to them. The Whangarei gelding, who had his first raco over hurdles in tho Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters' Hurdles on Saturday, looks the right type for this branch of tho game and with a little more experience he should turn out useful. Brown Lap (Forgus) wont over four hurdles and for a beginner his performance was promising. The stable mates Lighter (Baker) and Kenspeckle (Fergus) schooled in company. They jumped a pony hurdlo and then went over two of tho bic hurdles. They had plenty of pace on and Kenspecklo, who Jed his companion, took his fences in dashing stylo. His effort was impressive and a big improvement on previous displays. Lighter also shaped encouragingly.
