WANGANUI WORK

SOME SMART SPRINTS

FIVE FURLONGS BY AMIGO PEKOE GOES IMPRESSIVELY [by TKLKGRAI'il —OWN COIUIKSI'ONDUNt] WANGANUI, Monday Although there was nothing outstanding in the training operations at Wanganui on Saturday morning, smart sprints were registered by soveral horses engaged at New Plymouth next week or being prepared for tho spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club. Tho last work was done on the outside of the course proper, with the trestles out about loft. The weather was line, but the track was a triile soft. Pekoe, who has engagements at New Plymouth, was associated with All Bunsby over three furlongs in 38 2-ss. There was nothing between them at tho finish. It was the best gallop that Pekoe I has done recently, although lie was not fully extended. All Bunsby shaped pleasingly and is improving. Eurotas (S. T. Edwards) and March Easy (M. Home) finished together at the end of four furlongs ill 52 4-ss, alter the lirst two furlongs had been left behind in 25 2-ss. Eurotas impressed by his smooth display and the Pantheon gelding should do well in his early spring engagements. .March Easy has not been required to do much against the watch, but she is making good progress. Middle and Amatory Amatory was just inside the trestle near tho three-furlong post when his companion, Middle (Al. Home), was ready to jump oil', and as a result the latter gelding went oil on his own, to run 4Us. Amatory (S. Edwards) followed after an interval and registered 3i)s. Both shaped well and will probably race at the local meeting next month. Mawai (P. Mormon) and Lord Vegas (K. Cliote) were not extended while running four furlongs in 55 l-ss. The .Beau Pere gelding Amigo (11. Boyd) left five furlongs behind in 1.6, a task which was accomplished with impressive ease. Amigo is to be given a race at New Plymouth before fulfilling his engagement in the Wanganui Guineas. Authoress (S. Edwards) and Dartliura. (M. Home) were companions over three furlongs in 395, running tho first in 13 3-ss. They kept together until within a hundred yards of the post, when Darthura was given a kick and shot ahead to finish nearly a length in front. Gay Maid Schooled W. ltayncrs horses were galloped during the week and they were let off with useful work, Rehearsal and, Minga being trotted round before doing a circuit at three-quarter pace. Portal and Submission sprinted up the straight. Green Timber hit out well over a round, the latter portion of which was done at three-quarter pace. Gay Maid, who is in the Hunters' Hurdles at New Plymouth, was sent over tho big fences. With P. Morrison in tho saddle, she cleared five obstacles, comprising a brush, the brush double in the back stretch, the hencoop, and the initial brush fence again. She made no mistakes and appears to have made great improvement sinco entering W. H. Dwver's stable.

MELBOURNE CUP FANCY BRISTOL IN WINNING FORM The winning by Bristol of the second division of the Flying: Handicap at Victoria Park, Sydney, on Saturday, draws attention to the prominent place he has occupied for some time in Melbourne Cup quotations. Bristol has been allotted 8.3 in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups arid 8.4 in the Metropolitan Handicap. Now a four-year-old, Bristol has won four races —the Warwick Farm Novice Handicap, the Canterbury Park Guineas and the A.J.C. City Handicap, all at three years, and the event of last Saturday. As the distance of the City Handicap is a mile and a-half, he has already given indications of staying ability. He is trained by W. Keiso, who makes no secret of the fact that he expects Bristol to be one of the best stayers of the year and he is owned by Messrs. "E. and A. Darradale.'"

TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Tho promising three-year-old Oriental Bay will in future be trained by W. Kirk, who took him over on Saturday. An Australian-bred fillv, by Silverburn, owned by Mr. C. W. Merrylees, was placed in charge of B. McKay at Woodville on Friday. A. E. Ellis had sufficient riding over fences at lliccarton during Grand National week to qualify for events this season restricted to hurdle and steeplechase horsemen.

The Gisborno horses Brown Lap and Jayola, who competed at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting, are leaving to-day for Tauranga, where they are to be prepared for the Avondalo meeting next month.

The two-year-old colt by Defoo from Hine Wehi, bred and owned by Mr. N. Clout, will race as Sir Crusoe. The colt is half-brother to Mea Mea and their dam is sister to Pakitero and halfsister to Toxeunm.

As tho result of being kicked at the barrier beforo tho start of tho Admiralty Handicap at Ellerslio on Saturday, Jonathan was displaying signs of soreness at tho track yesterday morning. The injury, however, is not expected to interfere greatly with his preparation for Avondale.

Tho To Awamutu trainer A. Cook was a visitor to Ellerslio for tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting on Saturday and stated that the good colt Te Hero is going along nicely in his preparation. Owing to the alterations that are being carried out on the course at Te Awamutu Cook contemplates moving his team temporarily to Avondale.

WINNER FROM OLD DAM

An interesting fact 'regarding Pyrenees, winner of the Greenmount Hunters' Steeplechase at Ellerslio, is that his dam, Mountain Dream, was 20 years old when he was foaled. Foaled in 1912, Mountain Dream was a brown mare by Mountain King from Moorooroo, by Trenton from Nightmare, by Panic from Evening Star (imp.), by Lord Clifden. To Nassau she produced Erie, Anan Louise, Brushwood Boy, Higher Thoughts and Miss New Zealand and, to Quin Abbey, Good Idea and Abbey Dream. In addition she had several other foals by Littlo England and Tinokoa.
