WAIKARAKA PARK WORK NUMBERING OF HOUSES : The Onehunga Borough Council was advised last evening that its request for financial assistance from the funds available under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act to be applied to the completion of \\aikaraka Park, had been declined by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, it was suggested by the Minister that the amount required be raised by overdraft. Already a sum of £22,000 has been expended on improvements to tho park and extensions to the adjacent cemetery, and it is estimated that a iurther £BOOO will be required to complete the scheme. The engineer reported that the cost of keeping tho present number oi subsidised workers on the scheme in employment until Christmas would amount to £BOO, and -it was decided to proceed with the work. Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., wrote stating that he had appeared before the, Local Bills Committee on behalf of the council and had succeeded in having several amendments agreed to in tho Auckland Suburban Drainage Board's local bill. These included the right of any district to join up on application and a provision that assessments will be made in May, thus giving local bodies the opportunity of making tho necessary adjustments in the current year's rates. The engineer, Mr. H. Reynolds Bach, reported that the houses in six streets had no numbers whatever, while those in seven streets were incompletely numbered and those in 20 streets were not numbered in sequence. His estimate for renumbering the 3000 houses and shops in the borough was £2OO. Consideration of the report was deferred until October. To commemorate the silver jubilee of the To Papapa School, it was decided to accede to a s request to erect a drinking fountain in the school grounds, the cost not to exceed £']o. The sum of two guineas was authorised as a donation to the anniversary fund of the Wilson Home for Crippled Children. Mr. G. Henderson was appointed to the position of waterworks pumping engineer and turncock.
