TASMAN CUP
GOLF VICTORY DOMINION LADIES FOUR POINTS TO TWO RETENTION OF TROPHY OUTSTANDING PLAYERS By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August ID, 8.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. August 19 The New Zealand lady golfers retained the' Tasman Cup to-day, when they defeated Australia in the annual international match by four points to two. The results in order of ranking were as follows : Foursomes. —Mrs. Fullerton-Smith and Miss P. ITelean (New Zealand) defeated Miss Kernot and Mrs. C. L. Evans (Australia), one up ; Mesdames Clements and Hore (Australia) defeated Misses Fleming and Horwell (New Zealand), 3 and 1.
Singles.—Miss E. Kernot (Australia) defeated Mrs. Fullerton-Smith, 5 and 4; Miss Helean defeated Miss J. Gardiner (Australia), 4 and 3; Miss Horwell defeated Mrs. Hore, 5 and 3; Miss Fleming defeated Miss Clements, 4 and 3. Play in Foursome Matches In the first foursomes match play was very even to the 13th hole, where the Australians took the lead, but Mrs. Fullerton-Smith promptly squared the match with a 10-foot up-hill putt at the next hole. The New Zealanders won the match with a par four at the last hole. Miss Kernot was the outstanding player, but Mrs. Evans gave her poor support. In the other foursomes Mrs. Jlore's putting was the winning factor, while Miss Fleming's putting was weak. Miss Kernot's Fine Exhibition In the chief singles match Miss Kernot completely outplayed Mrs. Fuller-ton-Smith, who was inclined to luff her shots. Miss Kernot gave a masterly exhibition of bunker shots, every one of which she played to within two feet of the flag. Miss Kernot also putted consistently well, while Mrs. Fullerton-Smith on several occasions toqk three from the edge of the green. Miss Helean got an extraordinary length from the tees and was rarely in trouble. Her approach putting left nothing to be desired and in all she gave her best performance in Australia.
Miss Horwell played very attractive golf, hitting her tee and fairway shots with erispness and control. She was seldom off the line and her approaches invariably gave her putting chances. She found bunkers on only five occasions and always got out well. Good Putting by Miss Fleming Miss Fleming, after unsteady play at the first three holes, at which she sank long putts for halves, played in deadly fashion, winning five holes in succession to turn five up. Miss Fleming's approach putting was extraordinarily good. On almost every green her second putt was under two feet. Her tec shots were lengthy and accurate, resulting in very few visits to bunkers. Mrs. Guy Williams, non-playing captain of the New Zealand team, was extremely pleased at the outcome of the match. She said the two outstanding players were Misses Horwell and He lea 11. Fivo matches have now been played for the Tasman G'up. Now Zealand has won three and Australia two.
