DAY'S IDLENESS

PUKEMIRO COAL MINE MEN RESUMING WORK DISPUTE NOT SETTLED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HUNTLY, Monday A dispute concerning timber drawing at the Pukcmiro Colliery was* the cause of a stop-work meeting this morning and the mine was laid idle. Timber drawing consists of removing the timber which supports a working place where mining has been completed, causing the roof to collapse. It is considered one of the most dangerous occupations at the mine and each man so engaged is paid £1 9s a day. There was a vacancy among those doing this work recently and the dispute concerned a miner's claim to the management to fill the position. Ihe dispute was referred to Mr. T. Hall, secretary of the Northern AJineis Union, who paid a visit to the mine and met the men's delegates. No settlement was reached during the day nor at a meeting of the executive of the union at Huntly this evening. Each branch of the union in the district will be advised of the position by its delegate and the branches will report back to the Pukcmiro men. Work will be resumed at the Pukcmiro mine pending a satisfactory settlement.
