POLICE DEFIED
YOUTH WITH SWORD SERGEANT KNOCKED OUT Cornered by :i constable, a 16-vcar-okl Birmingham bov fired qt him with an air-pistol, struck him on the head with the butt, then felled him with a sword which he drew from his coat. The boy made off on a bicycle, followed by u police-car. The car had to run into his machine before the young "gangster" would stop. He then stood with his back to a hedge and defied the police with his sword. A sergeant who tried to grapple with him was struck a vicious blow on the ear nnd knocked unconscious. Ten stitches had to be inserted in the wound. This unusual story was told at Birmingham Assizes, when Mr. Justice Wrottesley sent the hoy— who was said to have carried on an orgy of shopbreaking—to Borstal for three years. "Quite an armoury" was the Judge's comment when told that the bov'a clothing was found to contain pockets for carrying ammunition, a sword and a sheath knife, and at his house were found four swords nnd a "blank" pistol.
