RUGBY FOOTBALL

COMPETITIONS TO-DAY TWO GAMES AT. SHOW GROUNDS Senior matches to be decided to-day ■under the control of the Auckland Rugby Union will be played on various suburban grounds on account of the .fact that Eden Park has been given over to the Auckland Hockey Association'for .the afternoon. Two games will be contested at the Show Grounds, one . at Onehunga and another at Papakura. The main attraction at the Show Grounds will be between Ponsonby and Training College. The former at present leads in the championship and will be out to retain its position. Training College will issue a stern challenge, and with the players fit and keen the side is capable of springing a surprise as it did at the beginning of the second round. The curtain-raiser between North Shore and Grafton should provide spectators with a fast and attractive exhibition. The contest at Papakura, in which Technical and Grammar will meet, promises to provide the best football of the afternoon. . Backs and forwards are evenly matched and the result is likely to go either way. Marist . and Manukau clash in the game at Onehunga. The latter has improved lately and should extend Marist. DEATH OF MR. ARNEIL RESPECT OF PLAYERS All teams playing in Auckland Rugby Union matches to-day will observe one minute's silence before their games on account of the death of Mr. J. Arneil, who was vicepatron of the union. MANAWATU REUNION . JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS A comprehensive programme has been " arranged by the Manawatii Rugby Union to celebrate its golden jubilee, which occurs this year. The most interesting of the many scheduled events, from the point .of view of old footballers who played in the Manawatu, is the grand parade and reunion, to be held • on the Show Grounds, Palmerston North, next Saturday. Jt is anticipated that many hundreds of ex-footballers from all parts of New Zealand will be present. A reunion of this nature is a fitting recognition of the part of old players in placing Manawatu on the Rugby map. It will also servo to enable visitors to renew friendships commenced on * the football fields years aero. The official programme for the celebrations includes quadrangular tournaments between St. Bede's, To Aute and Silverstream Colleges and the local high school, the first game of which will be played on Thursday. The final of the primary schools' fixture will be contested on Saturday prior to the winners and losers games in the secondary schools' tourney. Before the afternoon games a grand parade of old players, grouped into periods, will circle the ground, after which they will be the ' guests of the Manawatu Rueb.v Union at a lunctio/i to be held in the grandstand. An endeavour is hemp made at present to securo the suggested niatili between the 103S All Blacks and the Rest ot .Vcw Zealand for next Saturday. No official announcement has yet been made on the subject The Manawatu Rugby Union is particularly anxious to have as many ex-players as possible present at its function, and it issues a special appeal to old Manawatu players to foregather at Palmerston North for the coining celebrations I
