WILSON HOME
SUPPOKT REFUSED WHANGAREI COUNTY COUNCIL COMMENTS UPON CHARGES [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI. Friday The Whangarei County Council decided to-day that because a donation made to the Wilson Homo for Crippled Children could not assist northern children in need of treatment, 110 contribution should be made to the fund by the council. Tho subject arose from a. request from the controlling committee of the Wilson Home. Mr. J. A. S. Mackay, chairman of the council, and also of the Whangarei Hospital Board, said that tho assistance of crippled children was a most worthy object, but for children from the Whangarei district tho Wilson Homo was no benefit. "Any donation that this council made would benefit Auckland children only, not our own children," he said. "As members are aware, tho Wilson Home is under tho control of the Auckland Hospital Board, and in spite of many donations, including the very generous gifts from tho Wilson family, the charges for treatment are excessive —l6s a day for a child, as compared with 4s 6d a day in our local hospital. So far as I know it is not possible to get children from this district admitted into the home. "I have made this statement previously and been challenged bv the Bev. W. C. Wood, late chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, but 1 say again that 110 child from this district has entered the Wilson Home, except one child who was nn inmate of the Auckland Hospital. For a comparatively small expenditure we could instal the necessary special equipment for the treatment of crippled children in our own hospital under the above conditions. This council should just receive the letter." A motion not to contribute toward the fund was then put to the meeting and carried.
