MORE TRIALS IN MOSCOW
ALLEGED CAPITALIST PLOT HIGH OFFICIALS CHARGED (Received August 9, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 8 Fourteen high officials of the agricultural commission at Azerbaijan are on trial in Baku, charged with plotting to restore capitalism by various methods, including the murder of the Soviet leaders, says the Moscow correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. In order to help thousands of loyal Communists who were unjustly treated in last year's clean-up, the Communist Party has secured the review of 85,000 appeals, resulting in 46,000 exonerations and reinstatements. Seventy-five thousand of the 100,000 appeals lodged in 1938 are being considered. The Supreme Court of tho Ukraine passed the death sentence upon five leading colliery officials io/ wrecking. Two other engineers were sentenced to 25 years' gaol.
