I)R. E. STANLEY. JONES VISIT TO AUCKLAND MISSIONARY WORK IN INDIA Well known both as the author of books on theological subjects and as a missionary in India, l)r. Eli Stanley Jones will make a brief visit to Auckland early next month. Dr. Jones is to arrive from Australia by the Aorangi on September 5 and will leave the following day en route to Canada, and the United States. Arrangements for tho reception of Dr. Jones are in the hands of a committee representing the missionary interests of a number of Auckland churches. He is to address three meetings on September 5. A public gathering, which it is planned to hold in the Town Hall at mid-day, is to be followed by a meeting of ministers in the afternoon and a service in a city church in tho evening. Trained as a pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States, J)r. Jones was born at Clarksville, Maryland, in 1884 and went in 1907 to India, where he began a long period of missionary work. He was pastor for a time of the English church at Lucknow and later became mission superintendent of the Xucknow district and principal of the Sitapur boarding school. The degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on him by Duke Uniiersitj in 1928. . , His work of evangelism among the educated classes throughout India and the Far East took Dr. Jones on many long tours to Malaya, China, Japan and Korea. In 1926 he spent some months in the school of Kabindranath Tagore, the poet. His book "The Christ of the India Eoad," published in the same year, attracted extraordinary interest'and had an almost revolutionary effect on the management of Christian missions in India and international relationships in such work. Further books written by Dr. Jones include "Christ at the Round 1 able "The Christ of Every Itoad, lnc Christ on the Mount" and "Christ and Human Suffering.". He has twice refused to become a bishop of his church, and in Mav, 1928, while on holiday in the United States, was actually elected. He at once resigned on the ground that he wished to continue his work as a missionary.
