STIFLING INITIATIVE
BUKIIEN OF taxation
GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS INDUSTRY'S DIFFICULTIES [BV TELEGRAPH — lIW.V COHIU'.SI'ONDI'.NT] NEW PLYMOUTH, "Wednesday Tiie opinion that taxation, which was being continued at a level stitling to initiative, would ho apt to "kill the goose that laid the golden egg," was expressed by the secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Dr. K. I. Neale, speaking at the animal meeting of the Taranaki Chamber oi Commerce to-night. The position was aggravated by the excessive rise in production costs. Dr. Neale said the recent rise in imports showed the difficulties that most New Zealand manufacturers were experiencing. It was significant that the Governi.H'iiL Statistician's index liumher 011 New Zealand share prices had fallen from 10(15) to 010 in the past 12 months, and was now 8 ))er cent below the level of J920. The number of Government restrictions to-day was also criticised by Dr. Neale. Restraints, lie maintained, should be' only on evils, and should not frustrate initiative. Some oi the restrictions on industry seemed to bo detinitclv harmful.
