FRENCH TERRITORY AREA ON RHINE BORDER ECHO OF VERSAILLES TREATY PEASANTS* LAND EXPROPRIATED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July .17, 6.5 p.m.) STRASBOURG. July 1G Germany yesterday expropriated 1000 acres of land on the German side of the Rhine, including the French village of Rheinau, between Strasbourg and Basle, which became boundary territory following the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France after the Great War. The owners of the land refused to sell it for the purpose of fortifications. No mention is nuulo of an indemnity for them.
The Germans 'have already placed barbed wire and other defensive material on tho land, from which they refused to allow the peasants to harvest tho hay.
Germany announced on July 5 that she intended taking over 1000 acres at Rheinau, on the right hank of tho Bhine, to which French title was confirmed at the Versailles Conference, and also under special agreement in 1925. The Mayor of Bheinau refused to attend a meeting called by a German Army representative.
