ELLERSLIE WORK

GALLOPS ON THE GRASS

HALF-MILE BY FLEETWIND

ALYTH AND TE HAI PLEASE

Willi conditions improved, there was increased activity at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, when some sound sprinting was accomplished. The No. 3 grass, with the poles 10ft. out, was open 1 for fast work, the going being a trillo dead.

Knight of Australia (Fearn) and Wee Pat (Clarke) completed the lastsix of seven furlongs comfortably in 1.25 4-5. Wee Pat is making good progress in her preparation for the Pakurangii meeting next month. The rising two-year-old Vaals —Miss Mclva filly (Jones) was accompanied by Gloucester (Lindsay) in a two-furlong sprint, from tho six to the four, in 2(3 2-ss, the first furlong in 12 4-ss. The youngster performed in line style, and it was a very promising effort for an initial attempt. Fleetwind (Gilchrist) was responsible for a smart halt-mile in 52 15-ss, the first furlong being run in 13s. Fleetwind will make her next appearance at the Pakurango, Hunt meeting.

Tybalt (Tonks) worked easily over four furlongs in 56 l-ss. The Pomeo gelding lias freshened up well during the last few weeks. After running the first three in •10 4-ss, Valspear (Jones) finished six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. He was always doing it well within himself. Nothing at Ellerslie looks better than Valspear. Love Parade (Clifford) and the Musketoon—Croydon Lass gelding (Uarkwic'k) kept together throughout an easy four furlongs in 57 2-ss. Tupootu (Jiuttcrworth) finished-in front of Orenda , (SintOn), with Tane Mahutu (Olive) further back,' at the conclusion of a round in 1.54 3-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.31 2-5. Tupeotu did his work well, and appear. l ! to be much improved.

Odtaa Moves Well Odtaa (Jones) moved well while covering three furlongs in 41s. The full-brother to Scotland is making good progress. Piracy (Cammick) and Vnlmint (Murray) finished on terms at tho end of three furlongs in 40 3-ss. Valmint, who has made a good recovery from his injury, worked freely,, and was easily holding his companion at the finish. There was littlo between Te Hai (Markwiek) and Alvt.H (Gilchrist) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.5 4-5, the first two being run in 25 4-ss. It was a good effort, and Alyth, who appeared to.be going nicely at the finish, drew attention to her prospects at Matamata next Saturday. The rising two-year-olds La Vie (Jones) and the Vaals —Tliuranna filly (Sinton) were companions in a sprint over two furlongs from the six to tho four. La Vio got the better of the start and finished in front in 26 4-os. La Vie, who looks to be the most forward of the youngster} here, is a good goer. The" Vaals filly, who was having her first sprint, made up a good deal of ground, and her showing was distinctly promising. .

After beginning slowly, Te Maranui (Kei*r) got to the end of half a mile in 56 4-os, the last three furlongs being run in 41 2-ss. Ringshot (Green) and Hot Shot (Tinker) were under restraint while running three furlongs in 42 l-ss. Illimani (Kerr) sprinted the last three furlongs of his work in 445. Marie's Acre (Scott) impressed by the manner in which he covered half a mile in 52 4-ss, the first furlong in 13s Marie's Acre, who is inclined to be a lazy worker on his own, appeared to have to have something in hand at the finish. He has made very satisfactory progress lately, and may be given a race at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Kilonsa Doing Weil Stretto (Moore) was allotted threequarter pace over a round, and infused plenty of dash into her task. On the sand, Kilonsa (McTavish) and Land Girl (McCurdy) were not bustled to run four furlongs in 55 l-ss. Kilonsa is pleasing her trainer, and should bo very fit for spring lacing. The Matamata candidate, Palinint, was let off with steady pacing on the saiid. Hq suffered a slight injury in the paddock during the week, and is a little tender. ,

The only horse to itchool was Atta Jack (Gough), who cleared four of the pony hurdles in satisfactory style.

PLANS FOR PADISHAH bhigadore going south I 11Y TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT J WELLINGTON 7 , Sunday Power Chief ran a bad race in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Hastings on Saturday, being a long way back in the running and eventually falling. He was very distressed and ran as if lie were suffering Iron some disability, which may have been due to the lall be had in the .July Steeplechase at Wellington. A veterinary examination is to lie made and the chances are he will not be seen out again this season. F. McHugh, traiik'r of Brigadore. stated yesterday that the gelding had recovered from his fall in the Wellington Steeplechase and would go to Riccarlon and run in the Hornby Steeplechase prior to the National. Mr. J. Henna!), who has Padishah engaged at Riccarton, will probably make the trip. Padishah may run in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting in preference to the Longbench Hurdles, although this is not definite. C. P. Sheild will ride Padishah in his jumping engagements. Padishah ran in the open sprint at Hastings yesterday, and, although never a possibility, mad J up a lot of ground at the finish and was running on strongly.
