COMMENT ON FORM . MISHAPS IN AMATEUR CUP TAUTAU MAID TAKES HURDLES | BY TELEGKAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Last Post, favourite for the Amateur Cup Steeplechase, won from end to end. The race was spoilt early by Golden Glow falling at the first fence, Tom Cat collided with him on landing and fell and Red Sceptre also lost his rider. Last Post, under a good hold, had a long lead from Harkaway, in the running, and it was not until after jumping the last fence that he was asked for a serious effort. In the end he was able to beat Harkaway comfortably. There Were only four starters in the Stndholme Hack and Hunters' Hurdles and only three finished. Chaste and. McHeath raced abreast after jumping two fences, but Tautau Maid then drew to the front and led from McHeath and Chaste. Tautau Maid ran down the second to last hurdle and appeared to check McHeath and Chaste, both of whom crashed through the fence, Chaste losing her rider. McHeath, after making a good recovery, ran up to Tautau Maid in the run to the last fence, but the latter outiurnped him, and, gaining several lengths, went on for a decisive win. Maori Maid and Our Pal were first away in the Novice Stakes from Newsreel and Lord Ouyen, but at the end of two furlongs Maori Maid had opened up a gap and entered the straight well clear of Our Pal. Maori Maid was never in danger of being overhauled and won with something in hand. Quinopal was sent out a staunch favourite for the Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase, and, after allowing Gold Wren to set a fast pace some lengths in front for over half the journey, he assumed command and was not again troubled. Gold Wren hung 011 for second, a long way in front of Uncle Jim, with another gap to J3onnv Buff and Red Sceptre. Sporting Lass fell at the second fence.

Valantua justified his short-priced favouritism for the_Waih.no Hack Handicap by a convincing win. Irish birdcatcher and Donadea raced abreast in front from Lady IVliddleha in and Valantua. Irish Birdcatcher bled and dropped back at the throe-furlong post, interfering with Lady Middleham. Donadea led by two lengths from Valantua entering tlio straight, but the latter soon drew out to win -without effort. Silver Sail was turned the wrong way when the harrier went up at the start of the Morven Handicap and took no part in the race. Moneyless acted as pacemaker for five furlongs, when Royal Gallant went to the front and led' into the straight from Pink Robe and Petersham, Royal Gallant won comfortably from Pink Robe. Coleridge, favourite for the Winter Trot, piloted the field for about a mile and then gave way to MacGregor and Battlevale, who raced abreast to tlio straight in front of Parishoner. Battlevale made a determined eil'ort in the run home, but MacGregor comfortably held him off. Parishoner was close up next in front of Coleridge who was well back. The club was again unfortunate in having only four starters in the Waimate Hack Handicap. Valantua, carrying a 71b. penalty, was entrusted with the bulk of the investments and he made a game attempt under his 9.11, only to be beaten oy The Sandwichman. The latter was sent back last early, but made a forward move rounding the home turn and was first into the straight from V .lantua. Windward and Countervane. The Sandwielimnn held his own in the run to the post and won easily from the favourite.
