SPANISH RELIEF FUND

I QUESTION OF SUPPORT | OTAHUHU COUNCIL DIVIDED A division on a proposal to sponsor action in support of the national relief fund for children in Spain arose at the . Otahuhu Borough* Council meeting on j Monday night. A special committee subI rnitted a report recommending that the I Mayor, Mr. C. It. Petrie, M.P., conj veno a conference and endeavour to enlist support for the proposal. Opposition was expressed by Messrs. J. V. Lawes and F. W. Grev, who suggested that the council should not officially associate itself with the appeal. Mr. W. I). Cowpor said there were many returned men in the district whom the council could assist if it favoured leading any appeal. Mr. A. Murdoch said the council might content itself with placing lists in its own office and other public places. Mr. L. M. Pcglcr, convenor of the special committee, said any appeal arisingv from national calamities should be considered on humanitarian grounds. The Mayor said lie was conscious of local and national prejudice, but members should endeavour to discuss the matter impartially. An amendment, moved by Mr. Murdoch, that tlio council display lists, was carried by 5 votes to 3, and became the council's attitude in place of that proposed by the report.
