RECIPROCAL PACTS
EFFECT IN AMERICA REPLY TO CRITICISM (Received July 6, 8.27 p.m.) WASHINGTON. July O llie Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, has written to Mr. George Schneider, a member of the House of Representatives, stating that a memorandum ,which the latter had inserted in a Congressional record purporting to show / that reciprocal treaties had caused a> heavy inflow of competitive farm products, was entirely erroneous. Mr. Hull defended trade pacts as essential to international peace and a major factor in the economic well-being of tho agricultural industry of the United States. He asserted that much of the increase in imports was noncompetitive and the remainder largely wheat and corn. The importation of these was due almost entirely to short a g<?s caused by drought and therefore was abnormal and temporary, and •upplemtyited instead of displacing the domestic supply.
