DIAMOND WEDDING

AUCKLAND RESIDENTS MR. AND MRS. S. HESKETH LONG LIFE IN DOMINION Two well-known residents of Auckland, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hesketh, of 19 Gillies Avenue. Epsom, celebrated their diamond wedding yesterday. As the senior partner in the legal linn of Messrs. Hesketh, .Richmond, Adams and Cocker, Mr. Hesketh lias 60 years of law practice to his credit, and he is ono of the last survivors of the barristers who practised in the Auckland Supremo Court in the closing decades of the last century. Born in Manchester 88 years ago, Mr. Hesketh arrived at Auckland b.y the ship Devonshire on February /, 1863, the day that Auckland was ringing with the news of the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus on the Manukau Bar. A brother, Mr. Edwin Hesketh, one of the best-known of early Auckland barristers, was already in the city. Mr. Samuel Hesketh articled himself to his brother, and read for his law examination in company with Mr. Tlieophilus Cooper, who was in later years appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court and was knighted. Passing his examination in 1878, Mr. Hesketh was admitted to partnership in the firm of Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond, of which, after his brother's death, he became head. Mr. Hesketh was a member of the Epsom Road Hoard for a Jong period, and for somo 20 years was it's chairman. He was also at one time a member of the Manukau Water Supply Board. Mr. Hesketh took an active part in the work of the National Association and afterward of tho Reform Party, which developed from it. Born in England, Mrs. Hesketh came to the Dominion at an early age. She was married in the bishop's private chapel. Bishop's Court, Auckland, by Bishop Cowie. There are seven children, all living. The sons are Mr. H. R. Hesketh, of Auckland, now a partner in the firm, Mr. H. L. Hesketh, of Auckland. Mr. F. X. Hesketh. of Arapuni, and Mr. R. F. Hesketh. of Auckland. The daughters are Mrs. Archibald Tudhope. of Tauranga. Mr. A. F. Frater, ot Epsom, and Miss M. M. Hesketh, of Epsom.
