GOOD QUARTETTE

FINE IMPRESSION MADE TWO SOUTHERN WINNERS THE WRECKER AND GREAT PAL [by TELEGRAPH —FROM AltCHEll] WELLINGTON, Wednesday In spite of a very holding track, bohio good performances were witnessed at the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter fleeting yesterday. Among the most impressive were, those of Erination, Full of Scotch, The Wrecker and Great Pal. Erination added further lustre to his already line record when lie won tile Wellington Steeplechase, in which ho gave a fine display of fencing. The only surprise about his success was that he was so little fancied, hut the sole reason for that was his erratic schooling before the meeting, which no doubt was attributable to strangeness. Erination is very fit and should make a forward showing in the Winter Hurdles on the final day, yet he will not find it easy with 11.0.

Although he did not jump a couplo of fences well, Full of Scotch gained further admirers by his win in the Trentham Hurdles, which was his fourth in five starts over hurdles. The w;tv in which he ran on at the end indicated that he is a good stayer, and it will bo interesting to see how he shapes over two and a-quarter miles in the Winter Hurdles, in which ho has been rehandicapped 101b. to 10.11. With his increased weight ho will meet the horses he defeated on the first day at from 91b. to 201b. worse terms. Courtyard and Spender should both bo difficult to beat, especially the latter, who is on the improve and finished solidly on Tuesday. Improvement may be expected from Donegal and John Charles, the latter being a fine stayer. The patience which E. D. Jones has exercised with The Wrecker was rewarded when the four-year-old gained his first success by easily defeating El Meynell in the Te Aro Handicap. It looks as if it will take a good rise in weight to stop him in the class, and his prospects on tho later days of tho meeting appear rosy. He has plenty of size. He was produced when his dam was 21 years old and had failed to produce for a few seasons previously. Notwithstanding that he drew No. 21 at the barrier, Great Pal was always prominent in the Woburn Handicap, and over the last furlong he outclassed the field. He is an upstanding gelding who looks up to weight, and he should win again at tho meeting. One of tho most difficult he may have to beat tomorrow is Potent;, who is by Potoa from the Valais mare Fraisette, who was imported from England by Dr. W. C. Ring'. Tho fact that he drew No. 22 at the barrier was not in favour of Advance Plane in the Woburn Handicap, and it was only by a good finishing e:fort that he gained third place. Advance Plane has improved and should take beating at his next appearance. The .unlucky steeplechaser of the year is Bryce Street. After running three successive seconds, he was put out of the Wellington Steeples contest through no fault of his own. and at a time when he was running along pleasingly. Bryce Street did not appear to suffer any injury and his turn is due to corao at any time.
