NEW SURF-BOAT

CRAFT BUILT IN SYDNEY

ORDER FROM PIHA CLUB MANY MODERN FEATURES The decision to sell the surf-boat at present owned by the club and to purchase a new one from Australia was reached at the last meeting of the Fiha Surf Life-saving Club. The new boat which is to bo built by Mr. W. M. Ford, of Sydney, is described as being of the latest design and should bo easier to handle in a heavy surf. It will cost £l3O, most of which has already been provided by public donations. Although of the same dimensions as the present boat, 22ft. 6in. in length with a sft. 3in. beam, there is a vital difference in the design and construction in that the bow and stern will be blunter, giving the crew more. room. Buoyancy tanks will bo fitted fore and aft, while a standard surf-belt and about 300vds. of line are to bo placed in a forward position. Two of tho four oars will be 13ft. 6in. in length and the other two will bo 14ft. long. A sweep oar of 19ft. will bo used to give control.

As with the present boat, the two centre seats will be removable so that a patient may be placed on the floor boards if necessary and resuscitation carried out immediately. Queensland cedar will be nsed throughout, with the result that the boat will be much lighter than the one now in use. 1 It is hoped that it will arrive in Auckland before the end of November.

The secretary of the club, Mr. C. R. Holt, stated that the reasons for purchasing the new boat were that it would be more e_fficient than the one at present used,* and that it was intended to build up the club's equipment to equal that of Australia's leading clubs. The Piha club's equipment now includes, besides the boat, two surf-skis, two Hawaiian surf-boats, four reels, a rocket gun apparatus and a carbo-dioxido gun. Several members will be equipped with their own surf-skis next season.

An offer to purchase the old boat, which was bought from the Bronto Club of Sydney ,two and a-half years ago, has been received from tho Castlecliff Surf Life-saving Club of Wanganui.
