WANGANUI THIEVES' RUSE VICTIM SURRENDERS £l2/10/[by telegraph—owx correspondent] WANGANUI, Wednesday Detectives in Wanganui were approached yesterday by a man who stated that he whs about to be charged under the Gaming Act in connection with race betting. He said he had been stopped in the street by detectives,® who charged him with an offence against the Act, took all the money he was carrying, and commanded him to appear in the Court to answer the charge. The man was surprised when told by the detectives that it was the first they had heard of the matter. He then tola them that he had been approached by two men on Sunday, who had asked for information regarding the back* ing of horses. He replied that ho could not supply the information. The men, who had represented themselves as detectives, then drove off. When he was out collecting accounts for his employer on Monday, the Bame two men drove up in a car, stepping out quickly and assuming the air or detectives. They ' demanded that he hand over what money he had on him. This he did to the amount of £l2 10s, and they told him that they were lay•ng a charge against him "under the Gaming Act and said he would have to turn up at Court the * following morning. "Don't forget, 10 o'clock to-mor-row," they said, as they drove off. A search is now in progress for the bogus detectives.
