HANOVER PLEASES FINE SCHOOLING EFFORT SELKIRK DISPLAYS DASH [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday Tho Dannevirke Hunt Cup candidate Hanover (McDowell) gave a proficient display of fast jumping over four schooling hurdles at Awapuni yesterday. He went twice over the double brush and tho post and rails this morning, giving another faultless display. Tho Little England gelding is bred to bo a jumper, but may not be seasoned enough to show his best form yet.

Taillight (McDowell) and Pango (Parkcs) cleared four schooling hurdles in polished fashion, having a fair amount of pace on all the way. Taillight is to race at Marton. The two-year-old Selkirk (Dye) upriuted two furlongs in 25 3-ss, a smart effort. W. "J. Broughton will ride Mystery Boy and Golden Enterprise to-morrow, and may also be on Joe Louis. A hard frost delayed the commencement of training operations at Riccarton to-day. Tho inside trial grass was open, and many of tho horses engaged at Ashburton were galloped. The track was soft. Half-mile sprints were accomplished along the back. Tho best time early was credited to the Vaals gelding Rex Maitland, who recorded 50 3-ss, the first three furlongs in 36 2-53. Garonne was always in front of Crack o' Dawn while running half a mile in 50 3-ss. Crack o' Dawn is a three-year-old filly by Night Raid from Rawene, and will be useful with more time. She is owned by Dr. C. Nigel Smith, of Sydney, and will bo shipped to Randwick next month.

The Masquerader ran four furlongs in 50 4-ss. His stable mate Synthetic recorded 51 1-5. Other half-miles were Merry March and Patuma in 52 2-ss, Wagner in 53 2-ss, and Mungatoon 83 4-ss. Lady Leigh and The Wrecker attracted attention by reeling off five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, tho last four in 525. Lady Middleham and Supreme Court took 1.7, titno that was equalled by Stealamarch, who finished clear of Rose of Tralee. Master Dingle beat Mazzini in 1.7 2-5. Swordstick upheld his reputation as a good track galloper by beating Financiero and Haughty Winner over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, tho last four in 53 l-ss. Moonraker easily accounted for Nightdress over six furlongs in 1.20. M. B. Edwards paid a visit with Nocturnus, Cocksure, Phenomenal and Miss Bluff. Nocturnus and Cocksure ran a mile in 1.51 4-5, Nocturnus appears to be very forward. He is to bo taken over np;:iin by A. S. Kllis after to-morrow's meeting.

Phenomenal and Miss Bluff were allowed to cover six furlongs in 1.23. Bot.li are two-year-olds, the former being by Robespierre from Sundance, and Miss Bluff by Cockpit from Miss Camouflage. Settlement finished slightly in front of Palmyra at the end of a mile in 1.45 4-5, the first half in 51s. Flashlight covered the snme ground in 1,50. Monastic. Courtyard and Nightbound occupied similar time. TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE NEWS Te flai, who faced well nt Tauranga. is to go south next Thursday to compete at the Morton Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday week, whore ho is engaged in the Winter Stakes, seven furlongs. High Speod joined A. McMiillan's Riccarton stable from South Canterbury this week. He won the South Canterbury Steeplechase twice in succession and was once successful in a hack steeplechase at Trentham, but he has done very little racing in the last three years.

The death occurred on Tuesday night of the three-year-old Fafner, who was bred by Mr. J. J. Barry, Inglewood, and leased by Mr. F. Walker. In J. Fryer's Hawera stable he received his early education, but after soveral months Mr.. Walker decided to train Fafner himself. Mr. Walker purchased the gelding outright in January, since when he had won two races, the second occasion being at Otaki in his last start.
