WIMBLEDON TOUBNEY MALFROY ELIMINATED MAKO PROVES SUPERIOR MRS. WILLS-MOODY TESTED By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON, June 22 The Wimbledon tennis championships were continued to-day. In the men's singles Mako (United States), playing against C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand) was slow to get going, and the relative mildness of his service enabled Malfroy to run to 5—2 and then to 5—4. The New Zealander did much of the running to capture the first set. Mako served more fiercely in the ! second set, forcing Malfroy to resort to lobbing, with which Mako was mer- i eilcss. Malfroy's best defence was by | drop shots, but the American's "leggi- j ness" and reach often neutralised this. J Both men were below form. Malfroy in the fourth set found it paid to go j into the net and volley, but in long j rallies in the glaring sun in the fifth j Mako lasted better and Avon the match, j A full gallery on the centre court | saw Mrs. Hopman (Australia), though j defeated, test out the strength of Mrs. > Wills-Moodv (United States), which is j generally assumed to be waning. The Australian kept the rallies going gamely and easily matched the American's driving, but just lacked the purposeful finish which Mrs. Wills-Moody produced when in difficulties. M iss Helen Jacobs (United States) j fainted when walking on to the court to play Miss J. Ingram and the match was postponed.
