COUNCIL BY-ELECTION

CONTEST IN THE CITY NOMINATIONS CLOSE TO-DAY So far there are still only two nominations for the vacant seat on the Auckland City Council. Nominations will close at noon to-day and the election will be held on Wednesday, July 6. Several possible nominations by independent candidates have been spoken of and nomination forms have been taken out but have not yet been returned. The candidates already in the field are Mr. H. J. Butcher, who has been nominated by the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association, and Mr. C. Bailey, a former member of the council,' who has been chosen as the official Labour candidate. The Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., a former member of the council, who was regarded as a likely candidate-, stated that ho had decided not to be a contestant. it was necessary to open a second supplementary electors' roll to permit of the registration of thoso who are eligible to vote and whose names are not on the main or supplementary rolls. This roll has now closed and contains approximately 500 additional names.
