BURNING BITUMEN
FIERCE, SMOKY BLAZE COLERIDGE POWER STATION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday When switch Rear at the Lake Coleridge power station blew out yesterday afternoon a bitumen compound caught fire, the result being a fierce, smoky blaze. Chemical extinguishers were brought into use and the staff fought hard to extinguish the fire. Melting bitumen ran out in a bubbling stream, and the workmen had to face not only the fire itself, but also asphyxiating fumes from the bitumen and the chemicals of the fire extinguishers. A message from Dunedin says the entire Dunedin load yesterday afternoon was thrown on the Waipori station, augmented by the corporation's steam and Diesel plants.
