UNION LEADER'S DEATH

MR. HERBERT SMITH MINE WORKERS' PRESIDENT LONDON. June 16 The death has occurred of Mr. Herbert Smith, president of the Yorkshire Mine Workers' Union. Mr. Smith, for many years a leader of. the British miners, was born in Yorkshire in 1865 and at the age of 10 years began work in a coalmine. He was a . miiier for many years, but distinguished himself by a study of local problems, and also of general questions affecting the underground worker. His

dogged tenacity in the miners' cause carried bis fame beyond Yorkshire, and in 1923 he was elected president of the Miners' Federation. The policy of deceased was to stop uneconomic pits and fix the selling price of inland coal so that it would pay an economic wage. In 1929 Mr. Smith resigned from the office of president of the federation and was succeeded by Mr. T. Richards.
