KICKED BY HORSE
MISS GURNEY'S DEATH i VERDICT AT THE INQUEST A verdict of accidental death was returned by Mr. F. K. Hunt, coroner, at an inquest yesterday into the death of Miss Elizabeth Mary Gurney, aged 38, of Cockle Bay Road, Howick, who was kicked by a horse on May 27. Hylton Colin Meikle, company manager, a neighbour of deceased, said she was experienced in handling horses and had owned the one in question for about two years. She took it to him to be clipped, and while he was adjusting the shears he noticed the horse flinch, when deceased placed her hand on its quarter. The horse lashed out with its hind legs and struck deceased on the chest. "Horses have a long memory," witness added. "Apparently some other person ill-treated this animal when it was being clipped on a previous occasion." Dr. W. I. Cawkwell said death was caused by internal injuries.
