AUCKLAND OFFENDERS MORE PROSECUTIONS FINE OF £IOO IN ONE CASE A fine of £IOO was imposed on Albert Francis Davis in the Police Court yesterday when he was charged with making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining benefits under the Employment Promotion Act. It was stated that accused had obtained regular work on the waterfront, and had had employment under the No. 5 scheme, which was open only to selected men who had no source of income.

Mr. W. A. Black, who represented the Labour Department, said that accused had made nine false declarations and obtained an excess of £lO6 9s 7d. He had been on sustenance from January, 1938, to February, 1937. He was a married man with a family of five. Seven false declarations were stated to have been made by Cecil William Hutchinson, who obtained an excess of £lB 3s. He was fined £2O and costs. Another man who had casual work on the waterfront while making declarations of no income was Colin Howard Hutchings. It was stated that he had made li false declarations, obtaining an excess of £5 5s 9d. He was fined £6 and costs.

"I do not look on this as a bad case," said the magistrate, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, when Douglas Alexander Hutchison was charged with .obtaining money from the Labour Department by a false pretence. It was that he had made three false declarations and obtained an excess of £1 19a lid. He was fined £5 and costs.
