THE MAORI RACE
LECTURES AT MUSEUM WAR CANOE AS MEMORIAL "Many suggestions have been made regarding the erection of a memorial to the Maori race," said Mr. V. F. Fisher, who gave an address on "The Maori Canoe" at the lecture evening of the anthropology and Maori race section of the Institute and Museum held at the War Memorial Museum. "In my opinion," added the speaker, "there could be no finer monument to the industry and artistry of the Maori than the war canoe Toki-a-tapiri that we have here." Mr. Fisher praised the work of Princess Te Puea in the construction of canoes for the centennial celebrations of 1940.
A second interesting address, entitled "Fragments of Maori History," was given by the chairman, Mr. G. R. Brookes, who explained the derivation and meanings of various Maori place names in tho vicinity of the Hauraki Gulf. A number of lantern slides were used to illustrate the lecture. After the addresses, visitors were allowed to view items of interest in the Maori court, lecturers and guides conducting informal talks.
Short lectures were given by Miss 0. Adams, on "Maori Clothing"; Mr. M. Lee, "Maori Weapons"; Mr. A. Porter, "Greenstone"; and Mr. R. A. Scobie, "The Maori Meeting House."
